PATERSON, N.J. – New Jersey’s major firefighter unions, representing thousands of firefighters across the state, today formally endorsed Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. for a two-year term in the House of Representatives and Sen. Cory Booker for a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate.
Representatives from the unions gathered at Paterson Fire Department Headquarters to express their support for the senator’s continued dedication to public safety.
“We are supporting both of these elected officials because we believe that they are committed to fire services,” said President Ed Donnelly of the NJFMBA. “Cory has gone down to Washington and built upon the great work of Congressman Pascrell, through their support of SAFER grants which provide adequate staffing and resources to firefighters, ensuring that they are able to protect effectively our citizens and property.”
“Sen. Booker and Congressman Pascrell have always been advocates for the fire services and continue to take this commitment to another level in Congress,” said Chief Mike Postorino of the New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association. “This is an easy decision — we are happy to support them with our endorsement.”
“In the short time that Sen. Booker has been a U.S. Senator he has brought to Washington a welcomed new look and attitude,’ said President Dominick Marino of the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey (PFANJ). “Sen. Booker and Congressman Pascrell have been there for the fire service in Washington, that is why The PFANJ/IAFF are with them now.”
The unions endorsing Sen. Booker’s reelection include the New Jersey Fireman’s Benevolent Association, the Professional Fire Fighters Association of New Jersey, the New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association, the Newark Fire Officers, and the Newark Firefighters Union.
“Sen. Booker has proven that he understands public safety,” said Tony Tarantino, President of the Newark Fire Officers union. “We endorse him because we know that he will continue to keep the citizens of New Jersey safe.”
“We support Cory Booker because he’s very knowledgeable about public safety, having been the Mayor of the City of Newark which is the home to one of the busiest and biggest police and fire departments,” said President Chuck West of the Newark Firefighters Union. “He understands firsthand the problems that we have and the problems that we face. As senator, we think that he can be an ally and hopefully follow in the same footsteps as Congressman Pascrell, who has always supported police and fire.”
“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of the major fire unions in the state. Fighting on behalf of our firefighters is not something that I take lightly down in Washington or here at home,” said Rep. Pascrell. “As the co-Chairman of the Congressional FIRE Caucus I’ll continue to fight to ensure the FIRE Act, legislation I first introduced in 1997, continues to provide our brave first responders with the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”
“New Jersey firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. In Washington, I have been fighting to make sure that federal resources are coming back to the state to provide for the critical resources to keep these brave men and women safe on the job and enable them to better serve and protect our communities,” Sen. Booker said. “I am grateful for their service and it is an honor to be endorsed by New Jersey’s bravest.”
